About Noboribetsu Onsen

Noboribetsu

The origin of the word Noboribetsu comes from the Ainu tribes of Hokkaido.
Originally called “Nupuruppe”, with an etymological meaning of “white muddy river” or “thick colored river”, its story dates back at least 210 years ago in a book titled “Ezo Soshi” (by Mogami Tokunai).
He noted its presence as “hot spring water began flowing into the river making the bottom cloudy and unseeable”.
Toward the end of the Edo Era, the hot springs had been made into a bathhouse as the result of Hanbei Okada’s sulfur mining from Jigokudani. In turn, the establishment of the first hot spring inn by Kinzo Takimoto lead to the development of private road construction.
It’s main name recognition, however, comes later as a result of its designation as the place where the wounded soldiers of the Russo-Japanese war came to rebound their health. The source of the onsen is now nationally known as “Okunoyu”.

Okunoyu
【Ooyunuma】
Positioned to the north of Jigokudani(Hell Valley), this explosion crater is just south of Mt. Hiyori and raises a plume of smoke from the boiling pond it has become. The color of its hot water is gray black. This large scale swamp of hot spring is unprecedented in the world, a precious source of nature as well as carrying a great scientific value.
【Okunoyu】
This is a part of an explosion crater of Mt. Hiyori called “Fuki” which jets gray-black sulfur strongly from the bottom of an oblong-shaped swamp.
The surface temperature of the swamp is very high between 75℃ – 85℃, with its front and center areas being most volatile in streaming sulfur. It looks as though it is a metal pot boiling hot.
